Clark Smith Partnership were commissioned by Procter & Gamble Product Supply (UK) Ltd to develop a design for a new staff and visitor car park at their London Plant in Thurrock. The site of the car park comprised an infilled inlet off the River Thames and the ground investigation proved it to be underlain by very soft clays, silts and peat. The existing SW outfall was at near capacity and could not accept additional run-off from a hard surfaced solution. To avoid this and the removal of considerable quantities of on-site fill, CSP worked with Procter & Gamble to develop and design a porous surfaced car park using gravel filled Golpla linked to Hedley Avenue by a traditional ëblacktopí road saving substantial capital outlay and realising a considerable reduction in contract programme.
