CITY OF LONDON COMBINED HEAT & POWER SCHEME CHARTERHOUSE CHP STATION, LONDON

Job No: CIN/16

Clark Smith Partnership were appointed to work with Cabinet Guy Chatila, the French lead designer, to design the structure of this complex project. The station provides heat and power to a number of The Corporation Of Londonís major buildings and is designed to accommodate the phased installation of additional engines and generating plant, as demand for heat and power increases.

The engines, generators, exhaust plant and oil storage tanks are housed within the retained external walls of the previous listed building and extend 8 metres below ground, to the level of the railway tracks in the adjoining tunnel.

To prevent transmission of vibration to the surrounding buildings, the two engines are mounted on two independent piled concrete inertia blocks, each with a combined weight of 1000 tonnes, and isolated from the raft foundation supporting the building.

Close liaison with the process engineers was essential to ensure that the large items of plant were accommodated, while maintaining flexibility for future expansion.
